Ukrainian born Vasyl Zalucky, an iconographer and art professor from Edmonton, painted the iconostasis for St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church (Rycroft) in 1957. The unique style of the iconostasis combines traditional iconography from the post-war era with Ukrainian folk art elements. When the church closed in 2016, the iconostasis was transferred to the Basilian Fathers Museum. It will be installed in the museum’s main religious gallery in spring 2021.
Restoration of the Sawchuk Summer Kitchen
The Sawchuk summer kitchen is one of the only pioneer structures remaining in Mundare. Now set among a grove of poplar trees, it belonged to one of the original families in the area, who once lived on the property prior to the Basilian Fathers establishing their Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church in the town. The structure will be restored in summer 2021.
